Introduction
Welcome to Internet Counselling session provided to you by trained Helpline Workers of the Muslim Youth Helpline (MYH), Britain ’s first support service for young, vulnerable and marginalised Muslims. All our Helpline Workers are young people trained in basic counselling skills to help you whatever concerns or issues you are facing.
Some of the people who contact us are going through a rough time and are in desperate situations, whilst others are feeling lonely or confused. MYH workers are there to provide empathic support without the fear of judgement. Our Helpline Workers are between the ages of 18-30 years old, brought up in the UK so they are in a unique position of relating to issues that young people come to us with. Helpline Workers are trained to deal with all issues which young Muslims may be enduring such as mental health, sexuality, education and employment, relationship issues.
MYH already provides a national free-phone helpline and e-mail enquiries service. The helpline also operates a be-friending service in Greater London.
We, at MYH recognise that young people are increasingly using the internet and using MSN Messengers and live chat as a means of getting support from their peers and are responding to the needs of young people though internet counselling..
How it all works
If you are going through a difficult time and finding it difficult to talk to anyone about your emotions and feelings and do not want to talk about it over the phone or write an e-mail, you can access support through MYH Internet Counselling Service.
The service is open on Sunday from 12-6pm. The session works like MSN Messenger and you can talk to a Helpline Worker in ‘real’ time. If you are unable to get through and you really need to speak to a Helpline Worker, you can contact us by phone or by e-mail.
You will be able to talk to Helpline Workers who are between the ages of 18-30 years old and have been trained in basic counselling skills and have received training in areas of mental health, sexuality and sexual behaviour, self harm, education and employment, relationship etc. Our Helpline Workers will listen to you, support you and explore feasible options with you. Helpline Workers do not advise or guide young people but try to empower young people in making positive lifestyle choices. If you are in need of religious guidance or any sort of specialist help, we will refer you on to relevant agencies through our specialist database. Our specialists range from scholars, doctors, psychologists, counsellors, education consultants and are selected on their ability to understand cultural and faith needs of Muslim communities.
To access the internet counselling service, you will need to state what your issue or concern is, so that Helpline Workers can provide appropriate support. All other questions on age, sex, location and name are optional but would be useful for us to develop the service we provide. All sessions last between 30-45 minutes and can be terminated by both parties. MYH will terminate and ban users from sessions where users are abusive or are using sexually explicit language, if they do not heed warnings made by Helpline Workers. The service is available to anyone but is primarily targeted at young Muslims. We do not discriminate on the basis of age, sex, colour or creed and operate an equal opportunities policy.
