NEW CAMPAIGN: YOUTH VOICES II, RELATIONSHIPS AND MENTAL HEALTH

muslimyouth.net is launching the new Youth Voices campaign this September as a way to raise awareness about the issues that young people are facing in the Muslim community today.

We realise that topics such as drug abuse, relationships and sexuality are considered taboo and shameful within the Muslim community and often many young people are left isolated and alone as they have nobody to turn to in regards to these problems that are all too often ‘hushed up’.

A recent research report (‘Providing Faith and Culturally Sensitive Support Services to Young British Muslims’) developed by MYH in partnership with The National Youth Agency shows that 26% of helpline enquiries are to do with the issue of relationships. These statistics demonstrate that there is a high need to raise awareness and tackle this primary issue.

Also, issues relating to mental health are often left ignored and stereotyped, not only in the Muslim community but in general and this campaign strives to give a voice to those who have suffered from a range of mental health issues, such as depression and anorexia.

The campaign will profile the various support services that may be available to young Muslims who are either facing relationship problems or issues regarding well being and mental health. Over the next few months, we will be posting an array of articles which we hope will help young people to begin to understand some of the concerns which they or their peers might be faced with. The articles will range from personal accounts, to fact sheets with detailed information on relevant support services.

We want you to get involved in the campaign, as we will also be filming short dramas to alongside the articles. Keep an eye out on the site, further details coming soon! If you would like to submit a personal account of your own, please contact us at bushra.khanom@myh.org.uk.
